Plant Production

"Ahakoa he iti he pounamu"- Even though it is small it is a treasure.

What we do

Everything at Te Ārai is done locally - so if you buy from our Nursery, you know it came from and was cultivated in the local area.

We specialise in providing plants for large scale projects and can grow to order. We would love to hear from you about your specific requirements.

We can also assist every step of the way with expert advice in:

  • Planning production and coordination for your project

  • Sourcing natives

  • Delivery

  • Installation and planting

  • Pest control

  • Ensuring your natives thrive and grow

At present, the nursery has the capacity to grow up to one million plants each year and we cultivate 48 different native species.

Our most popular natives are manuka, kanuka, cabbage tree, karamu, harakeke and native sedge. Additional native species can be cultivated for your specific requirements by arrangement.

We are currently looking to scale up plant production in order to grow and deliver even more native plants.

Our expansion aims to ensure that we are always able to meet our customers’ requirements, as well as to:

  • Drive positive outcomes for local people and places

  • Increase skills and employment in the region through training and education opportunities

  • Contribute to regional economic growth.

Eco-sourcing

Eco-sourcing refers to the propagation of native plants from local areas and the planting of them back within the same region.
Te Ārai Native Nursery currently has seeds stockpiled and eco-sourced plant stock available from the Kaipara, Otamatea and Rodney districts.
Sustaining genetic biodiversity through wider sources of seed/plant tissue is vital for good ecological biodiversity and creating greater resilience. We understand the necessity of maintaining New Zealand’s biodiversity and supporting existing ecosystems.

Plant Maintenance

A plant that is kept weed-free will grow quicker and healthier as it doesn't have to compete with other plants (weeds) for the available nutrients and water and sunlight

Pest and Disease Management

Te Ārai Native Nursery adheres to strict Kauri dieback and Myrtle Rust Management Protocols and are free of plague skink and Argentine ants.
