Common Broom | Carmichaelia australis, also known as Makaka, is a small to large shrub endemic to New Zealand. It has many flattened green twigs clustered at the top of grey-brown branches.
The twigs are flattened, grooved, and measure 2-8 mm wide. Leaves are small and inconspicuous, arranged in three leaflets.


The white flowers have a purple center and cluster along the twigs. Its fruit is a small, dry, pointed pod containing 1-3 hard orange seeds.
